Gilbert is preparing to launch a six-month pilot program using traffic safety signs aimed at reducing crashes, injuries and fatalities on town roads.

The effort, which will begin Oct. 1, follows months of planning by police, traffic engineering staff, outside consultants and the town manager’s office.

The program is designed to raise driver awareness and influence behavior through eye-catching, thought-provoking messages.

“Our goal was really to develop a signage pilot program that is looking at reducing unsafe driving behaviors by our people that are in those vehicles that may be crossing roadways by walking, et cetera, et cetera, and provide them with some thought-provoking traffic signage,” Town Engineer Susanna Struble said.
