Alabamians who struggle with delays and surprise bills from the state's unemployment system will be able to sue the state after years of legal obstacles.
The Alabama Supreme Court Friday ruled that a group of Alabamians who sued over problems with unemployment during the pandemic can go forward with their suits after years of legal obstacles that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The case was first brought by the group, with the help of Legal Services Alabama, a non-profit that serves people with low incomes, in 2022 over errors and delays with unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Plaintiff s have experienced extreme delays at every step of the unemployment process," the citizens stated in their 2022 complaint against the department.
