University College of the North (UCN) has received $5 million from the Mastercard Foundation to expand educational opportunities for Indigenous youth, part of a landmark national investment announced this week.

The funding is drawn from the Foundation’s $235 million commitment to 30 post-secondary institutions across Canada, aimed at supporting 100,000 Indigenous youth in completing their education and transitioning to meaningful work by 2030.

The announcement coincided with the tenth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report, underscoring the role of education as a critical path toward reconciliation.

For UCN, which serves communities across Northern Manitoba, the funding represents both recognition and opportunity.
