PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A man climbed the radio tower at Lamar State College Port Arthur Monday afternoon, prompting a large emergency response as police work to bring him down safely.

The call came in around 3:30 p.m. at the Ruby Fuller building, where witnesses reported seeing the man on the tower, which is estimated to be about 200 feet tall. Port Arthur police officers are negotiating with him while fire crews and EMS are standing by in case of an emergency.

Battalion Chief Jay Fountain of the Port Arthur Fire Department said the man has been involved in similar incidents before. He has climbed a water tower on the west side and a high tension tower where St. Mary Hospital used to be, according to Fountain.

Police have not identified the man or released any information about his motive
