There was a fabulous northern lights show last night across Michigan and the northern half of the U.S. Could it happen again tonight? Why are northern lights more common at this time of year?

Last night the northern lights were visible as far south as Colorado. Here in Michigan we had a decent northern lights show. I watched the northern lights near the Traverse City area around 10 p.m.

While the strength of the magnetic field producing northern lights is forecast to be a touch weaker tonight, the forecast of the force isn’t often a great forecast. In other words, sometimes a stronger force comes as a surprise. That’s what makes seeing the northern lights so elusive.
