MUSKEGON, Mich. — Opening the doors to the almost 100-year-old lighthouse in Muskegon is like opening a history book, although it is in need of some TLC.
"Approximately 75 percent of the light needs to be replaced," said Kim Lange. "Bits and pieces here and there."
Lange is the volunteer manager for the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy. She says the South Breakwater Lighthouse, or "light" as they call it, will need a major overhaul bringing new paint, steel and concrete to the lakeshore icon.
Even though it was built in the 1930s, she says it still has use today.
"It guides ships back into Muskegon even today," said Lange. "Even with GPS, because you never know when that's going to go out and you'll always have the beacon to guide you back in."
