PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) - Our media partner WMTW has confirmed a man who was taken into custody near a Portland elementary school last week was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Portland Public Schools Superintendent Ryan Scallon had informed families and staff members that a student’s parent was detained by law enforcement agents at about 8 a.m. on Thursday on the access road for the Gerald E. Talbot Community School.
Scallon said the agents were in unmarked vehicles and wearing vests marked “police,” but the officers did not reveal what agency they represented when they were approached by a school administrator. Portland Mayor Mark Dion expressed his frustration over the fact that the officers did not identify themselves.
