BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A bomb planted by members of the Ku Klux Klan exploded inside 16th Street Baptist Church 62 years ago Monday, killing four young girls and becoming a turning point in the civil rights movement.
The Birmingham community gathered Monday morning to honor the lives of 14-year-olds Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, Addie Mae Collins and 11-year-old Denise McNair.
Sarah Collins Rudolph, the sister of Collins, survived the attack but was blinded in one eye. She said the anniversary is a reminder of the work that still needs to be done.
