GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — What does Grand Rapids need to do to continue building itself as a tech hub? Instill curiosity in its students, tech legend Steve Wozniak says.
Tech Week Grand Rapids officially kicked off Monday with a keynote address from Apple co-founder Wozniak. Amid stories of the early days of Apple and hijinks during his days as a student — like building a transmitter that messed with the picture on his college campus' only color TV — he offered advice to the city of Grand Rapids.
The key to bringing in big tech companies is "they need people to hire," he said. That starts with the local universities, he said, adding — to a round of applause from the audience — that he is very impressed with Grand Valley State University.
But it also starts in elementary classrooms.
