A driver was seriously injured on Monday morning after he drove around a railroad barricade and was struck by a southbound Amtrak train passing by Sound Transit’s Sumner Station.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to a Tacoma hospital, said Sumner Police Department spokesperson Carmen Palmer.

Witnesses called 911 around 10:30 a.m. to report the crash. Several people said they saw a vehicle drive around the barricade at Maple Street and Traffic Avenue, just north of the train station, Palmer said.

It’s unclear whether the barricade — which temporarily lowers to prevent vehicles from crossing the railroad tracks whenever trains are approaching — was fully lowered by the time the man drove around it, Palmer said.
