The Miami Marlins designated veteran right-handed pitcher Seth Martinez for assignment late last week. According to his MLB.com transaction log , Martinez cleared waivers and elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment with Miami.

Martinez, 31, joined the Marlins in February after being claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was then DFA'd by Miami and claimed by the Seattle Mariners in March, but claimed back by Miami a few weeks later. He was then DFA'd again in late March, but this time cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Martinez made 41 appearances at Triple-A this season, sporting a 3.71 ERA with 54 strikeouts and eight saves across 43.2 innings pitched
