President Donald Trump told reporters he hasn’t decided on Chinese ownership of TikTok when asked in the Oval Office if China will continue to have an ownership stake in TikTok’s parent company.
“Well, we haven’t decided that,” the president said.
A framework deal has been reached between China and the U.S. for the ownership of TikTok. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday after trade talks in Madrid that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping would speak Friday to possibly finalize the deal.
Bessent says the objective was to switch to U.S. ownership from China’s ByteDance. China’s international trade representative told reporters that the sides have reached “basic framework consensus."
Trump went on to praise his campaign’s presence on the app last year and said it helped his support with young voters in the 2024 election. Trump added that TikTok, “Can maybe even bring us closer to China.”
