LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- The Michigan Department of Treasury is warning of a text scam mentioning the agency.
The agency says cyber criminals are sending unsolicited text messages telling recipients they are due a tax refund -- but if they don't respond quickly with banking information, they'll forfeit the refund.
The agency reports it only communicates with people through official U.S. Postal Service delivery.
“This scam is just another trick in the cybercriminal playbook,” Katina Litterini, who oversees Treasury’s Tax Administration Services Bureau, was quoted in a department news release. “Taxpayers who receive this bogus text message should immediately delete it.
