MINNEAPOLIS — The doors at Annunciation School will reopen Tuesday for the first time since the August 27 shooting, marking a pivotal moment for students, staff and families beginning their path toward healing.

Among those helping them navigate that path is someone who has walked it before: Frank DeAngelis, the former principal of Columbine High School, where 13 people were killed in 1999.

“It really hit me hard last year at the 25-year remembrance,” DeAngelis said. “A mother came up to me and said, ‘My daughter would have been 44 this year — and that’s how old I was when it happened.’”

DeAngelis has made it his mission to help communities heal after mass shootings. He says faith, counseling and community support were crucial for him in the years following Columbine.
