A 24-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after the man he shot, who was his girlfriend’s father, died a little over one week ago, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

JSO said Dontay Taylor was originally arrested on Aug. 25 after its detectives learned that he had shot Derrick Griffin, 50, while Griffin was attempting to break up a fight between Taylor and his daughter, who were in a relationship at the time.

Police said Griffin died from his injuries on Sept. 7.

“Taylor was already behind bars in the Duval County jail when detectives arrested him for murder. He’ll continue to be held in jail,” JSO said. “We’ll continue to work this case with our partners at the State Attorney’s Office to make sure justice is served for Griffin’s family and friends.
