Verona, N.Y. — The owner of a horse stable in Oneida County has been accused of mistreating animals there.

Misty Carey, the owner of MC Stables, was indicted on a single count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, as well as 17 counts of torturing/injuring/not feeding an animal, a misdemeanor.

Carey, 49, was arraigned Monday in Oneida County Court and pleaded not guilty. She was released on her own recognizance.

MC Stables was responsible for boarding, training and racing horses, according to a news release Monday from Robert Maciol, the Oneida County sheriff.

Deputies began investigating the stables in July after receiving a report of malnourished horses at the property in the town of Verona, Maciol said.
