PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Mayor of Peoria Heights said he didn't anticipate that he'd have to veto a vote on the grocery tax when campaigning for Mayor, but he still majorly respects the board members who voted for it.

On Friday, Mayor Matt Wigginton posted on Facebook that he will be vetoing a 1% grocery tax was passed 5-1 by the trustees on Sept. 2.

He said this is something that he wanted to stick to his word on, and could be beneficial to the village.

"I campaigned on no municipal grocery tax in Peoria Heights and I wanted to keep that promise," Wigginton said. "I know a lot of our surrounding communities are instituting their own tax, but on this issue, we have a different community in Peoria Heights. So I think it was best for our community."
