GREENFIELD – A judge sentenced a former Northampton man Monday to five to 10 years in state prison for his lead role in a hate crime in which he and a companion attacked two people at a Sunderland liquor store last year.

Warren Martinez, 31, and Thomas Patnode, 25, attacked an employee at a Sunderland store and her fiancé after the employee refused to sell them alcohol July 16, 2024, the Northwest District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Monday.

Both the employee and her fiancé are transgender and the defendants used a homophobic slur during the attack, according to the news release.
