A man who was allegedly wielding a brick or shovel was fatally shot by Anaheim police Monday near an elementary school.

Officers responded around 12:45 p.m. to the area of Falmouth Avenue and Holly Street to a report of a man armed with a brick, but it later appeared he was carrying a shovel, Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter told reporters at the scene.

Nearby John Marshall Elementary School was placed on lockdown as police responded to the report.

Once on scene, an unknown confrontation occurred between the suspect and police, prompting at least one officer to open fire, striking the man, Sutter said. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The suspect’s name was not immediately released. It was still unclear what prompted police to open fire.

No officers were injured.
