Anaheim police shot and killed a man who was allegedly wielding a brick or shovel near an elementary school Monday.

Officers responded about 12:45 p.m. to the area of Falmouth Avenue and Holly Street to a report of a man “acting suspiciously” with a brick, but it later appeared he was carrying a shovel, Anaheim police Sgt. Matt Sutter said.

When an officer arrived on scene there was a conflict that prompted gunfire from the officer, Sutter said. The officer attempted first-aid and the man was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about a half-hour after he arrived, Sutter said.

The man appeared to a homeless person who was about 30 years old, Sutter said.
