CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden hopes the high-profile murder case of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska will turn the spotlight to the importance of mental health.

Decarlos Brown Jr. is charged with Zarutska’s murder. She was riding on Charlotte’s light rail on August 22nd when Brown is seen on video suddenly stabbing the 23-year-old with what appears to be a pocketknife.

Paperwork states Brown will go to Central Regional Hospital in Butner to be evaluated to see if he is competent to stand trial. Brown has been at the Mecklenburg County Jail since his arrest. McFadden says the detention is forced to handle inmates like Brown.
