Two early-morning smash-and-grab attempts using U-Haul trucks were reported Monday, Sept. 15, one Royal Oak Township and another in Detroit.
In Royal Oak Township, a U-Haul truck was rammed into Prestige Hookah & Smoke Shop on W. Eight Mile Road around 3:25 a.m. in an attempt to steal an ATM. Police said preliminary investigation shows three suspects may have been involved.
Troopers responded to the smoke shop after a security company reported a break-in alarm, Michigan State Police said in a post on X. When troopers arrived, they found the front of the store had been smashed by a U-Haul box truck. The suspects had already fled.
The U-Haul had not been reported stolen at the time of the incident, according to police. The truck had a punched ignition and a damaged steering column.
