The United Steelworkers union is pressing U.S. Steel for more details about the upcoming idling of steel slab production at Granite City Works in Illinois.

U.S. Steel and its new owner Nippon Steel do not plan to immediately lay off any of the 800 steelworkers at the mill, which stopped producing iron when it idled its last blast furnace in 2023. But 150 workers already are laid off there and job cuts are inevitable if the facility remains idled, USW District 7 Director Mike Millsap said.

The union has been pressing for more details of the company's plans for the steel mill in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
