The five Nelson County residents running for three seats on the county school board gave their reasons for running and views on a range of educational topics during a Sept. 8 candidates forum in Lovingston.

Joe Richardson and Sarah Beth Tracy are running for the North District, Wayne Hachey and Stacy Rush are competing to represent the Central District and Joe Kennedy is unopposed in the East District. The election on Nov. 4 will bring much turnover to the board as current members Margaret Clair, Janet Turner-Giles and George Cheape are stepping down at the end of the year.

Richardson said he believes public schools can transform lives and asked the crowd gathered at The Nelson Center to think back to a teacher who made a major impact on their lives many years ago.
