PORTLAND, Oregon — Monday marked El Grito de Independencia, the holiday commemorating the start of Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain. At the Rose Quarter, a modest crowd gathered for El Grito Portland, a festival featuring live music, food and local vendors. But amid the celebration, concerns over federal immigration crackdowns prompted reflection on the challenges facing many in the community.

“There is something to be said about celebrating and still being brave and still being willing to say, ‘I am here,’” said Oscar Nieves Lira. “I feel for my people. I don’t want to see those images; I don’t want them to live in that position.”
