MERCER, Pa. (WKBN) -- The Mercer Area School District in Pennsylvania has taken steps to alert parents and authorities after a medication called methylene blue was distributed to several football players before a game.

According to a study conducted by Harvard Medical School, methylene blue has been used in the past for specific medical applications, but recently has seen some off-label use -- specifically as an energy booster.

Earlier this month, a person identified in a letter from the school only as "an individual" entered the locker room and distributed the liquid to players on Sept. 5.
