An independent hearing began in Saskatoon on Monday to address the dismissal of former Sgt. Robbie Taylor from the police force. Taylor was terminated in March due to his friendship with a man associated with the Hells Angels biker gang. The hearing will evaluate the appropriateness of police officers' personal associations.

Taylor is appealing his firing, and the case is being mediated by Ronni Nordal. The hearing will include testimonies from various witnesses, including Saskatoon Police Chief Cameron McBride.

Taylor's attorney, Brian Pfefferle, argued that his client was dismissed for having a friendship with someone who is linked to individuals in outlaw motorcycle clubs. Pfefferle stated, "So friends of friends are people that the police service does not want him associating with. And we say it's far removed and it's something that there shouldn't be an association concern there."

On the other hand, Ashley Smith, representing the Saskatoon Police Service, contended that Taylor's relationship with the individual in question raised concerns about his suitability as a police officer. Smith noted that Chief McBride determined that Taylor's association compromised his position, leading to a loss of trust and confidence in him.

The hearing also heard from police gang analyst Matthew Matieshin, who had known Taylor professionally for over a decade. Matieshin expressed concerns about Taylor's relationship with the biker associate. He revealed that he learned of the man's ties to the Hells Angels through surveillance at various events earlier in 2023.

Matieshin recounted an incident where Taylor intervened during a traffic stop involving his friend, asking an officer not to issue a ticket. Matieshin remarked, "I thought it was inappropriate that he inserted himself into a traffic investigation. It was concerning, and should be documented."

Additionally, Matieshin mentioned that Taylor had previously shared information about a Hells Angel prospect and acknowledged his friendship with someone connected to the gang. Taylor reportedly disclosed that he had traveled to Ireland with the associate and accepted an expensive watch as a gift.

The hearing is set to continue on Tuesday and is expected to last throughout the week.
