ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — An inmate already in the Chemung County Jail was arrested on Tuesday after deputies said drugs were found on him during a search back in June.
Zachary M. Smith, 32, was arrested recently on the charges of promoting prison contraband in the first degree, a class D felony, and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor, according to information from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.
On June 20, 2025, while inside the jail, a search was conducted on Smith, where deputies found an unknown substance. An investigation into the substance was started, and after further testing, the substance was found to be fentanyl, the sheriff's office said.
