HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Marshall University President Brad D. Smith and First Lady Alys Smith are donating $50 million to a university program designed to eliminate student debt, according to the university.
The Smiths are donating the money to advance Marshall For All, which allows students to combine scholarships, grants, work opportunities, and family contributions to earn their bachelor’s degree without the need of student loads.
According to the university, the donation is the largest given to Marshall and is the largest personal contribution made by a sitting university president to their own institution.
