OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Neighbors in North Omaha are growing increasingly concerned about a homeless encampment near 28th and Pinkney, saying it’s affecting safety, property, and quality of life.
City Councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin said she was surprised by how many people she saw living under dense tree cover and how close they were to homes.
“We understand the immediacy, the need for more capacity and coordination,” Goodwin said.
Residents report they’ve been harassed, their homes vandalized, and that they don’t feel safe. They are so uncomfortable, some refuse to be on camera.
“When it’s adjacent to you, when it’s in your backyard, then there’s the urgency,” Goodwin said.
The land where the encampment is located is privately owned by Habitat for Humanity and the Nebraska Department of T
