A crash on Route 2 in Central Massachusetts Monday morning sent six people to hospitals, including one person who sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Troopers from the Athol Barracks responded to exit 79 on Route 2 at 9:53 a.m. Exit 79 is on the Phillipston/Templeton line. One vehicle was fully engulfed in flames following the collision, which involved a tractor-trailer and at least five other vehicles, said Trooper Brandon Doherty, a spokesman for State Police.

Both lanes of the highway were closed following the crash, in part to let a medical helicopter land on the scene. Eastbound lanes reopened around noon, and lanes heading west reopened around 2:45 p.m., the Massachusetts Department of Transportation wrote on X .
