Greenwood officials plan to freeze nearly all hiring and salaries for next year’s up to $72.9 million budget amid expected revenue shortfalls from Senate Enrolled Act 1.

While the city’s firefighters will see a 1% raise, they’re concerned the proposed budget doesn’t do enough to raise firefighter pay to levels near other area departments’ and are accusing Mayor Mark Myers of “empty promises”— claims Myers disagrees with.

A public hearing on the budget is set for Oct. 6, which is when the first vote on it will take place. Final action is expected at the council’s Oct. 20 meeting.
