A Hamilton police officer faces an aggravated assault charge following an investigation by Ontario's police watchdog into the arrest of a 59-year-old woman.

The director of the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has "reasonable grounds" to believe Const. Matthew Eleftheriou committed a crime in relation to a "serious injury" the woman suffered, the SIU said Tuesday.

The SIU scrutinizes police interactions that involve a death, serious injury or sexual assault.
