A Hamilton police officer has been charged with aggravated assault following an investigation by the provincial police watchdog.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) announced Tuesday that Const. Matthew Eleftheriou was charged following an investigation stemming from the arrest of a 59-year-old woman on Feb. 23, 2025.

The SIU noted that director Joseph Martino found “reasonable grounds to believe” that Eleftheriou allegedly “committed a criminal offence,” adding that the woman was seriously injured during her arrest.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police in Ontario in which someone is seriously hurt or killed.

No further information has been released about the incident by the SIU or Hamilton police.
