LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Nine inmates in the Ionia County Jail were taken to the hospital and treated after being exposed to carbon monoxide on Saturday.
The Ionia County Sheriff's Office reports that on Sept. 13, jail staff were notified of a chemical odor emanating from one of the housing units at around 12:22 a.m. Inmates also reported feeling unwell.
The nine inmates inside were moved outside to a recreation area. Ionia Public Safety officers identified the odor as carbon dioxide.
The inmates were later transported to the U-M Ionia Hospital and Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. They received treatment and were cleared by medical staff, returning to the jail at around 5:00 p.m., except for two of them.
