LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Michigan Democrats have reintroduced a bill that would impose penalties on anyone who knowingly lies about elections or a voter's eligibility.

The bill was reintroduced last week by state Sen. Mary Cavanagh of Redford Township.

Cavanagh said the goal is to deter election-related misinformation in Michigan, a critical swing state. She said these types of misinformation can reduce voter turnout and undermine the election system.

Last year, Elon Musk and other right-wing activists promoted the false claim that Michigan has more registered voters than eligible residents, suggesting voter fraud. Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic secretary of state, corrected Musk multiple times and called his comments "dangerous disinformation."
