SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Monday evening after 6:30 p.m., the South Bend Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 1000 block of N. Brookfield Street.

When they arrived, crews saw heavy smoke and fire coming from both the first and second floors of a single-family home. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack to knock down the flames, while another crew worked to cool the neighboring home to prevent the fire from spreading.

The fire reached the attic but was contained by 6:55 p.m. The residence was under construction at the time of the fire, with no one present and no active utilities.

No injuries were reported to firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
