ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is urging farmers and applicators to prioritize safety over speed when handling anhydrous ammonia (NH3) this fall.

Accidents involving NH3 can lead to severe injuries or fatalities, the MDA warns. Farmers, fertilizer dealers, and custom applicators are advised to take extra precautions during application, transport, and storage.

“Anhydrous ammonia is an important fertilizer, but its use isn’t without risk,” MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen said. “Slowing down, wearing protective gear, and keeping water on hand can make the difference between a safe season and serious injury.”

Applicators should wear NH3-rated goggles and gloves, avoid contact lenses, and keep at least five gallons of clean emergency water accessible. Precauti
