A man was stabbed to death during a disturbance in Fitchburg Tuesday morning, according to police.

Fitchburg police responded to Chester Street for a report of a disturbance involving a knife shortly before 5:30 a.m., police said in a press release. At the scene, officers found a 40-year-old Fitchburg man with multiple stab wounds. The man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, but was later declared dead.

"The preliminary investigation indicates this was not a random act, as the individuals involved were known to each other," the police department wrote.

Police did not identify the victim, and it is unclear whether a suspect has been arrested or charged in connection with his death. Fitchburg police and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating
