COLUMBUS, Ohio — As city leaders weigh a rental registry for rental properties, residents in Columbus neighborhoods like the Hilltop say the proposed rental registry is long overdue.

Carla Carr, who has lived in Columbus for more than 30 years and now owns a home in the Hilltop, said poorly maintained rental and vacant properties are a growing issue in her neighborhood.

“These are properties that are owned by people all over the country and even outside [the] country,” Carr said. “It’s difficult to find an owner who lives in, let’s say, Virginia and is completely neglecting [a] property.”

Carr said some rental homes have become neighborhood nuisances, and without anyone to take accountability, the problems often go unchecked.
