Officials have confirmed the first death related to West Nile virus in Wayne County in 2025.
The person was in their 70s, said Kimberly Harry, director of communications for the Wayne County Department of Health, Veterans & Community Wellness.
Officials did not provide details, including the person's name or hometown. A release said the individual had underlying health issues.
“This tragic loss is a reminder that West Nile virus can have serious consequences and why prevention is so vital,” said Dr. Avani Sheth, Wayne County chief medical officer. “We urge residents to take simple, effective steps — like using insect repellent and draining standing water — to protect yourself and your loved ones.”
