AI calls on the rise as experts urge caution with answering the phone

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)---Scammers are using AI to replicate the voices of people who answer their scam calls.

The calls can be made to sound like someone you know, like a family member or friend.

"I think it's really important to know what scams are out there, so if you don't know what scams are out there, to even look to identify on,e so thinking about looking for information, like talking to people about what scams are out there and learning what they are and how to identify them," said Beth Stranges, Department of Aging Director.

Experts say to be cautious about answering the phone if you don't have the caller in your contacts.
