The 49ers nearly were without another one of their star players for Sunday's Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints.

However, left tackle Trent Williams, despite nursing a painful bone bruise, gutted it out and delivered a stellar zero-pressure performance in San Francisco's 26-21 win .

Williams, who arrived at the field on Sunday extra early to test out his knee pregame, told reporters after the game that he initially did not expect to play, but then was motivated to suit up after arriving at the stadium and seeing his teammates.

“Then I got in the stadium. The competitive juices started flowing," Williams said (h/t The San Francisco Standard's David Lombardi). "I’m a captain, I’m a leader. So it’s hard for me to just say, ‘I’ll see you guys next week.’ "
