Meryl Streep is mourning the loss of Hollywood icon and former costar Robert Redford.

“One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend,” Streep, 76, said in a statement via ABC News on Tuesday, September 16, after Redford’s death at age 89.

Streep and Redford shared the screen in 1985’s Out of Africa, a romantic drama directed and produced by Sydney Pollack. The film, based loosely on the 1937 autobiographical book of the same name by Isak Dinesen, saw critical acclaim, with Streep earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, while costar Klaus Maria Brandauer earned a nod for Best Supporting Actor. Pollack ended up taking home the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for the film.
