NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - Metro Nashville leaders say the city is running out of affordable housing, an inventory that was already low.

They cut the ribbon Tuesday on a brand-new complex that is part of a larger push to ease the housing crunch.

Nashville is growing faster than it can build, according to a March 2025 study commissioned by the Metro Council.

That study shows that about 90,000 new homes are needed in the next decade just to keep up.

So the new Highland East housing development hopes to lower that number. The upcoming neighborhood is in east Nashville, off Ben Allen Road.

The development is Nashville’s first trail-oriented development, and leaders say it will eventually allow people to ride a bike all the way to downtown.
