Provo, Utah – New court documents have revealed key details about the case against Tyler Robinson, the man accused of murdering conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors have charged Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder and other offenses related to the shooting that occurred on September 10 at Utah Valley University in Orem. Authorities are seeking the death penalty if he is convicted.

Robinson allegedly confessed to the crime in a series of text messages to his roommate, who is also his romantic partner. In one message, he reportedly wrote, "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I'm going to take it." The roommate discovered a note under Robinson's keyboard that contained a similar admission.

During the investigation, prosecutors found DNA on the trigger of the rifle used in the shooting that matched Robinson's. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray stated that Robinson had been planning the attack for over a week. "The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy," Gray said during a court appearance.

Kirk was shot in the neck while addressing students at the university. Prosecutors allege that Robinson fired the shot from the roof of a nearby building. He appeared in court via video link, wearing a green protective vest, and remained mostly expressionless as the charges were read.

The court documents also indicate that Robinson expressed feelings of hatred towards Kirk, stating in a text, "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out." His mother noted that Robinson had become more politically active and supportive of LGBTQ+ rights in the past year, which led to tensions with his father, who holds conservative views.

After the shooting, Robinson's parents recognized him in a police photo and confronted him. He reportedly expressed suicidal thoughts, prompting them to seek help from a family friend, a retired sheriff's deputy. This friend encouraged Robinson to turn himself in, which he did the following day.

Robinson was arrested near St. George, Utah, about 390 kilometers from the shooting site. In the text messages exchanged with his partner, he expressed concern about retrieving the rifle he had hidden and mentioned the possibility of being caught by police. He also directed his partner to delete their messages and advised them to remain silent if questioned by authorities.

In addition to aggravated murder, Robinson faces charges of felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. The charges carry enhancements for committing the crimes in the presence of children and for the political motivations behind the violence.

The investigation continues, with authorities looking into Robinson's connections, including a gaming chatroom on Discord that involved more than 20 people. The FBI is exploring all leads related to the case, which has raised concerns about political violence in the United States.

Kirk was a prominent figure in conservative politics and a supporter of Donald Trump, known for energizing the Republican youth movement. His assassination has sparked discussions about the increasing polarization and violence in American political discourse.
