Tory MP Garnett Genuis was aiming for MPs to debate issue in the House of Commons

OTTAWA — The House of Commons wants nothing to do with an emergency debate on youth unemployment.

That request was made Monday by Conservative MP Garnett Genuis, who told the the motion was dismissed outright by House speaker Francis Scarpaleggia.

“I was disappointed the emergency debate wasn’t granted,” he said, saying the situation is indeed to the point where an emergency debate was warranted.

“At 14.5%, clearly we’re at recession levels for youth unemployment.”

Indeed, that assessment concurs with a Desjardins report issued earlier this month that pegged youth unemployment at levels normally seen during recessions.

According to that report, youth unemployment was just 10% in 2022.
