PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. (WMBD) -- The Peoria Heights board of trustees will decide next month whether to overturn the mayor’s veto on a proposed grocery sales tax.

Last week, Mayor Matt Wigginton announced he planned to veto the board of trustees' decision to impose a one percent grocery tax.

At Tuesday's meeting, Wigginton reminded the audience that he ran his campaign on not having a municipal tax. He said he feels fiscally comfortable with his decision.

Wigginton said a veto is not to vilify those who agree with the taxation, but they simply disagree on how to move the village forward.

It was decided that the trustees will vote on whether or not to overturn the veto or choose other options at the next meeting on Oct.7.
