A trio of travellers is lucky to be alive after their single-engine plane crashed beside a football field at a Scarborough high school.

Dog walkers and students at Monarch Park, west of Coxwell and Felstead Aves., were craning their necks on Tuesday and and climbing hills to get a look at a crashed Piper PA-28-140. The Transportation Safety Board said the plane encountered engine failure on Monday at around 8:20 p.m.

Lori Zinger, who was in the dog park, climbed up a steep hill to catch a glimpse of the plane.

“This is insane,” said Zinger. “For an airplane to land. And you see no other damage.”

“But somehow they managed to land safely and the three people inside it are with us thank goodness.”
