Mark Carney is failing when judged by his own measure of accountability.
Food inflation numbers out on Tuesday morning show exactly why so many Canadians are struggling when they visit the grocery store. While the main inflation rate rose by 1.9% in August, compared to a year earlier, inflation at the grocery store stood at 3.5% year over year.
Many products were much worse with meat up 7.2% and beef up by 12.7%, compared to August 2024. Of course, food inflation has been rising for several years which means a compounding effect and prices of certain items compared to just a few years ago will be even higher.
